A 64-year-old man who regularly portrayed Santa Claus, popularly known as Father Christmas at holiday events in New Jersey, United States, has been arrested for allegedly possessing and distributing child sexual abuse materials.
The case has triggered widespread concern, particularly because of his repeated and close interactions with children while performing the role.
Findings revealed that the suspect, Mark Paulino of Hamilton Township, was taken into custody on Monday. He is facing charges of possession and distribution of child sexual abuse material as well as endangering the welfare of a child, according to local authorities. The incident was reported on Tuesday by the Daily Star.
Mercer County officials also revealed that an investigation into the case began on December 4, 2025, after detectives received an alert about suspicious activity linked to the uploading of child pornography from a Hamilton Township home. Investigators identified Paulino, a retired elementary school teacher, as the individual allegedly responsible for the uploads.
Police revealed that Paulino had maintained an online presence describing himself as a retired teacher and had recently worked as a ‘Santa for hire’ for private, corporate, and community events. The role placed him in direct proximity to children through photo sessions and festive activities.
Authorities said this raised immediate safety concerns.
“Because this role involved direct, repeated contact with children, detectives worked around the clock to secure a search warrant,” officials stated.
Detectives executed the search warrant on December 5, recovering multiple items described as “evidentiary.” Paulino was arrested without incident, police added.
After Paulino’s arrest, prosecutors filed a motion seeking his continued detention pending trial. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials are urging members of the public to provide any relevant information.
Authorities also encouraged parents and event organisers who previously hired the suspect in his Santa role to come forward if they have concerns.
