An unusual scene unfolded on Monday at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja as protesters arrived carrying mattresses and pillows during a demonstration over the Electoral Act amendment.
Some protesters were seen lying on mattresses and pillows at the protest ground, drawing attention as demonstrators gathered to demand the compulsory real-time electronic transmission of election results from polling units.
The protest comes amid continued debate over proposed amendments to the Electoral Act ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly on whether the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should be required to transmit results electronically in real time.

While many Nigerians have urged lawmakers to make real-time electronic transmission mandatory, some legislators have argued that the provision should remain optional, citing logistical and infrastructural challenges.

Protesters on Monday also moved toward the entrance of the National Assembly, insisting that the proposed legislation must clearly include the phrase “real-time electronic transmission,” despite repeated clarifications from the Senate denying claims that the clause was rejected.
A heavy security presence was observed at the complex, with security personnel deployed to maintain order as the protest continued.
