Members of the Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria on Friday converged on the Lagos State office of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control to protest the ban on producing and selling alcoholic beverages in sachets.

The distillers were joined by officials and members of the Nigerian Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, who marched with placards and sang solidarity songs during the demonstration.

Some of the placards displayed messages such as “Stop destroying local manufacturers,” “N2 trillion investment deserves protection,” “5.5 million Nigerians cannot be pushed to the streets,” and “The Renewed Hope Agenda must work for all Nigerians,” among others.

As of the time this report was filed, the distillers had not addressed journalists at the venue.

Likewise, no official of NAFDAC had come out to speak with the protesters.

The protest is believed to be connected to the unresolved dispute over the ban on the manufacture and sale of sachet alcoholic drinks.
