JAMB Clarifies ‘Hijab Removal’ During UTME Registration

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has stated that candidates are not required to remove their hijab during registration.

The clarification followed a social media video alleging that a Muslim candidate was compelled to remove her hijab while registering at Afe Babalola University (ABUAD).

In the footage, a man claimed he accompanied his sister to a JAMB registration centre, where she was allegedly instructed to take off her hijab before her photograph was captured and to sign a document because she wore it.

Responding, JAMB maintained that it has never introduced any directive prohibiting the use of hijab. The board explained that the matter concerned a biometric guideline, not religion.

According to JAMB, both ears must be visible during photo capture. It noted that this standard also applies to international passport and visa applications. The board emphasized that candidates do not have to remove their hijab entirely but only adjust it slightly to ensure their ears are visible for proper identification.

“She was requested to formally state in writing that she personally chose not to comply with the guideline regarding ear visibility, so that the record would accurately reflect the circumstances and prevent future misrepresentation,” the board said.

“She obliged and was successfully captured, albeit after considerable time and effort.

“For clarity, candidates are not required to remove their hijab. The simple requirement is that the ears be visible during photo capture, which can be done without removing the hijab itself.

“This is a standard biometric procedure, similar to what is obtained during passport or visa applications at embassies worldwide.”

JAMB explained that the candidate was asked to write a note confirming that she opted not to follow the ear-visibility guideline to ensure accurate documentation and prevent future disputes. She was subsequently captured successfully.

The board urged the public to refrain from spreading misleading claims and encouraged individuals to verify information when uncertain. JAMB also reassured Nigerians of its respect for candidates’ rights and religious beliefs.

Registration for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) commenced on January 26, 2026, and will conclude on February 28, 2026.

Direct Entry registration will begin on March 2, 2026, and end on April 25, 2026, and will be conducted exclusively at JAMB’s zonal and state offices.
