Six persons have lost their lives, while two others sustained injuries following a fatal crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Thursday.

Emergency rescue operations were ongoing after an 18-seater commercial bus collided with a truck near the NASFAT area of the expressway in Ogun State.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun Sector Command, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Thursday, stating that the crash occurred at about 2:36 pm.

According to the FRSC, the accident involved a Mazda commercial bus and a Volvo truck along the busy corridor of the expressway.

“The cause of the crash was overspeeding,” the statement noted.

Earlier reports indicated that the incident became public after a video recorded at the scene surfaced before the arrival of emergency responders.

The sector spokesperson, SRC Odunsi Afolabi, disclosed that eight persons were involved in the crash, explaining that six victims died instantly, while two others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

“We were told that some good Samaritans conveyed some injured victims to an unknown hospital before the arrival of the rescue team. Other victims were taken to Famobis Hospital, Lotto, for medical treatment, while the deceased were deposited at the morgue.

“The FRSC Sector Commander in Ogun State, Corps Commander Akinwumi O. Fasakin, has directed FRSC crash investigators to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the incident, in line with standard procedures,” he said.

Afolabi added that FRSC officers from the Mowe Unit and Ibafo Outpost, ambulance teams from the Ojota Unit Command, as well as personnel of the Nigeria Police and TRACE officials, were actively involved in the rescue exercise.

He further stated that while some injured victims were taken away by good Samaritans before responders arrived, others were transported to Famobis Hospital, Lotto, for medical attention.

The remains of the deceased victims were later deposited at a morgue.
