The military leadership has submitted to President Bola Tinubu a report of its investigation into what it described as “indiscipline and breach of service regulations” by 16 detained officers allegedly linked to a coup plot.

According to Presidential sources who spoke with Daily Trust, the report was forwarded to the president after more than two months of intensive interrogation and investigation conducted by the Defence Intelligence Agency.

The source disclosed that a presidential decision on the report “will allow further actions.”

“Those mandated to probe the involvement of the officers have concluded their assignment and submitted the report to the president, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces,” the source said.

When asked about the findings of the report, the source added: “All I can say is that the officers were indicted and will be sanctioned accordingly once the president gives approval.

“Although I cannot confirm whether they will be court-martialled for the offence they may have committed, they will face sanctions in line with the military’s standard procedures.”

A senior source at the Presidential Villa also confirmed to the publication that the military had formally briefed the president on the outcome of its investigation.

“They (the military authorities) briefed Mr President that it (the attempt to stage a coup) was real. The report clearly showed there was an attempt by the detained officers to carry out what the media reported they planned to do.

“The Brigadier-General among them was arrested because it was discovered that he was aware of the plot but failed to report it,” the source stated.

Although the Defence Headquarters has denied the existence of a coup attempt and reaffirmed its loyalty to Tinubu’s administration, reports of the detained officers and the dismissal of service chiefs days after the alleged plot went viral have continued to fuel public speculation.
