Nigeria’s World Cup hopes revived as DR Congo face Eligibility Probe

The Nigeria Football Federation has confirmed that it has initiated a probe into DR Congo’s alleged use of ineligible players during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, a development that could reopen Nigeria’s route to the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, according to reports.

DR Congo knocked Nigeria out of the African play-offs in November after edging the Super Eagles 4–3 on penalties in Morocco, a result that ended Nigeria’s bid to advance to the FIFA intercontinental play-off.

The Congolese team has since been granted a bye into the final of the intercontinental play-off tournament, where they are due to meet the winner of the semi-final between New Caledonia and Jamaica.

However, their place at that stage may now be uncertain following concerns raised by the NFF regarding the eligibility of some DR Congo players fielded during the African play-offs.

Reports indicate that between six and nine DR Congo players who changed national allegiance may not have fully met eligibility requirements under Congolese law before representing the country.

Although FIFA reportedly cleared the players on the grounds that they held valid DR Congo passports, it is alleged that they did not formally renounce their previous citizenships, contrary to the country’s constitution, which prohibits dual nationality.

“NFF has done the needful,” a member of the federation’s executive board told PUNCH Online.

“Their constitution does not allow dual citizenship, and about six to nine players had that status during the play-off. That is the loophole we are exploring. Our lawyers must have submitted the relevant documents to FIFA as well.”

NFF General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi, also confirmed that the federation has challenged the players’ switch.

“We’re waiting. The Congolese rules say you cannot have dual citizenship or nationality,” Sanusi said. “Wan-Bissaka has a European passport; some of them have French passports, others Dutch passports. The rules are very clear, and we have submitted our petition.

“FIFA rules say once you have a passport of your country, you’re eligible, and that is why they were cleared,” Sanusi explained. “But our concern is that FIFA was deceived into clearing them. It is not FIFA’s responsibility to enforce Congo’s domestic regulations; FIFA acts based on what is submitted to it. What we are saying is that the process was fraudulent.”

The situation has reignited Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. The country had earlier faced the prospect of missing consecutive World Cups after failing to qualify for the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

DR Congo, for their part, have featured at the FIFA World Cup only once, in 1974, when the country competed under the name Zaire.

Chelle Accuses DR Congo Staff of Using ‘Voodoo’ in Nigeria’s Penalty Defeat

ideemlawful profile1iDeemlawful November 17, 2025
ideemlawful profile1iDeemlawful

Nigeria coach, Eric Chelle, has alleged that a DR Congo staff member engaged in “voodoo” during the penalty shootout of Sunday’s World Cup playoff in Rabat, where the Super Eagles were knocked out of the race for the 2026 tournament.

The term voodoo is commonly used to describe a range of traditional spiritual or ritual practices, although it is frequently applied inaccurately or in a misleading way in sporting conversations.

Players, coaches, or fans sometimes claim that opponents use it to influence the outcome of a match, suggesting that supernatural forces rather than skill or strategy were responsible for the result.

Nigeria’s campaign ended in a 4–3 defeat on penalties after the match finished 1–1 across 120 minutes at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.

The loss means the Super Eagles will miss the World Cup for the second consecutive year.

In a video posted by ESPN Africa on X on Monday, which showed Chelle speaking to journalists after the match, Chelle said he reacted out of frustration after witnessing repeated gestures from a member of DR Congo’s technical area during the video assistant referee review for a penalty incident.

“During all the penalty decision, a guy of Congo did some voodoo… Every time, every time, every time. So this is why I was a little nervous after him,” he said.

When asked to explain what he saw, Chelle added while gesturing: “Something like that. I don’t know if it’s water or something like that.”

The claims could not be independently verified.

Nigeria had taken an early lead through Frank Onyeka in the third minute before M. Elia drew DR Congo level in the 32nd minute.

Both sides created chances in extra time but neither team found a winner.

The shootout swung back and forth.

Calvin Bassey and Moses Simon failed to convert Nigeria’s early kicks, while Nwabali saved DR Congo’s first attempt to keep the contest balanced.

Akor Adams’ effort kept Nigeria in contention before DR Congo scored their fourth penalty to seal the 4–3 win.

The result sends DR Congo into the intercontinental playoff for a chance to secure one of the remaining tickets to the expanded 48-team World Cup scheduled to hold in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Nigeria had reached the final after a dramatic 4–1 extra-time win over Gabon in Thursday’s semi-final, while DR Congo defeated Cameroon 1–0 to book their place.

The Leopards now await their playoff opponent as their qualification bid continues, while the Super Eagles’ hopes ended in painful fashion in Rabat.

Hope for Eagles as FIFA Deducts 3 Points from South Africa in World Cup Qualifiers

ideemlawful profile1iDeemlawful September 29, 2025
ideemlawful profile1iDeemlawful

The Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) has officially docked three points from South Africa in the ongoing 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee penalised the South African Football Association (SAFA) for fielding an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, in the South Africa vs. Lesotho clash played on March 21, 2025.

Mokoena, who had already received yellow cards in two earlier fixtures, featured in the starting lineup as South Africa beat Lesotho 2-0 on March 21.

The Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder should have served a one-match suspension but instead played, breaching Article 19 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC) and Article 14 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Preliminary Competition Regulations.

As a result, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee ruled the game forfeited by South Africa, awarding Lesotho a 3-0 victory.

SAFA has also been fined CHF 10,000, while Mokoena received a warning.

All parties were informed of the ruling today and have ten days to request a motivated decision, which, if pursued, will be published on legal.fifa.com. The sanction remains open to appeal before the FIFA Appeal Committee.

The decision drastically alters Group C standings in the CAF World Cup 2026 qualifiers. South Africa, who had initially taken three points for the 2-0 win, lose them and suffer a 3-0 defeat.

This outcome offers a huge boost to Nigeria’s Super Eagles, who are battling South Africa, Benin, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, and Lesotho for the group’s top spot, which secures automatic World Cup qualification in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

South Africa are now level with Benin Republic on 14 points, while Nigeria sits just behind with 11 points.

The ruling intensifies pressure on all teams as they approach the final rounds, turning every remaining fixture into a must-win encounter.

Osimhen to return for Galatasaray UCL Amid Eagles’ Qualifiers

ideemlawful profile1iDeemlawful September 12, 2025
ideemlawful profile1iDeemlawful

Galatasaray forward Victor Osimhen is set to make his long-awaited return in the Champions League next week, easing fears of a lengthy absence and delivering relief to the Turkish champions, reports confirmed.

According to Kemerburgaz, Osimhen will skip the domestic league clash against Eyüpspor to avoid aggravating his ankle.

With preparations focused on him leading the frontline against Frankfurt in Thursday’s European opener.

“Osimhen is expected to be rested and not risked in the league match away to Eyüpspor, with plans for him to start in the line-up for the Champions League clash in Frankfurt next Thursday evening,” Fanatik quoted Kemerburgaz.

The Nigerian striker picked up an ankle injury while on international duty during a World Cup qualifier against Rwanda.

He was forced off in the 35th minute after collapsing in pain, sparking immediate concerns in Istanbul over his availability for key fixtures.

Galatasaray swiftly dispatched a private jet to fly him back for urgent tests.

Medical scans confirmed a moderate sprain with ligament bleeding in the ankle.

The club later issued a statement signed by team doctor Yener İnce, which read:

“Tests conducted at our sponsor hospital revealed a moderate sprain with bleeding in the ankle ligaments of our player Victor Osimhen. Treatment has begun to ensure his return to the pitch as soon as possible.”

The update brought major relief to Galatasaray fans, many of whom feared the worst when the 26-year-old went down in Kigali.

Osimhen, who netted 37 goals in 41 matches last season, remains pivotal to the club’s European push after sealing a record €75m transfer from Napoli. His rapid recovery is being viewed as essential for manager Okan Buruk’s continental plans.

Reports suggest the forward met with Buruk immediately upon his return to Istanbul, assuring the coach of his commitment to make sacrifices for the club’s Champions League campaign, which Galatasaray have tagged as a top priority this season.

His return is especially significant given the uncertainty around Mauro Icardi’s fitness.

The Argentine remains short of full match sharpness, meaning Barış Yılmaz is tipped to lead the line against Eyüpspor while Osimhen is carefully managed. The club insists no unnecessary risks will be taken with their record signing.

NFF Blames Dessers, Ekong for Super Eagles’ Draw With South Africa

ideemlawful profile1iDeemlawful September 10, 2025
ideemlawful profile1iDeemlawful

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has held Cyriel Dessers and captain William Troost-Ekong responsible for the Super Eagles’ 1-1 draw against South Africa in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles faced Bafana Bafana on Tuesday in Bloemfontein, entering the game desperate for a win to boost their qualification chances.

However, their hopes took an early blow when Troost-Ekong inadvertently scored an own goal in the 25th minute, handing South Africa the lead.

Nigeria fought back just before halftime through Calvin Bassey’s powerful header, restoring parity in the intense clash.

In a post-match statement, NFF Director of Communications, Dr. Ademola Olajire, singled out Dessers for criticism, revealing his poor display led to his early substitution.

“Cyriel Dessers, who had an unimpressive game in Uyo where he turned out to be a substitute that was substituted, did not have a better game as he was too slow to latch onto passes, could not win aerial balls, and did little in bringing alive the Nigerian attack,” the federation said.

The NFF also faulted Troost-Ekong for the own goal, which it claimed temporarily deflated the team’s morale.

“The Super Eagles’ fighting spirit was diminished for a period after team captain William Ekong inadvertently swept the ball into his own net in the 25th minute, wrong-footing Stanley Nwabali to give the Bafana the lead and great impetus,” the statement added.

Despite the criticisms, the federation praised Bassey for his determination to pull Nigeria back into the game.

“Defender Calvin Bassey showed immense fighting spirit and resilience to get Nigeria back into the game with a minute left of the first period, when he ran with the ball upfront. The ball found Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, whose pull-out Bassey met firmly to nod past Ronwen Williams for the leveller,” it noted.

However, the NFF lamented the Eagles’ lacklustre second-half performance, criticising their bluntness in attack and inability to convert key chances.

With the result, Nigeria sit third in Group C with 11 points from eight games, six points behind leaders South Africa. The Super Eagles now face an uphill battle, needing wins against Lesotho and Benin Republic while hoping rivals slip, to keep their 2026 World Cup dream alive.
