The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has initiated disciplinary measures against Senegal’s title-winning coach, Pape Thiaw, following his directive for players to leave the pitch during the tense closing stages of the AFCON 2025 final against Morocco.

According to reports, Thiaw is facing possible suspension by the CAF Disciplinary Committee, while several players are also being reviewed for their involvement in the protest that led to a 14-minute disruption of play.

The controversy unfolded late in regulation time with the scoreline still 0-0. After Senegal had a goal ruled out, referee Jean-Jacques Ndala awarded Morocco a penalty following a VAR review for a foul on Brahim Diaz.

Viewing the decision as deeply unfair, Coach Thiaw instructed his team to walk off the field. The standoff ended only after captain Sadio Mané intervened, persuading his teammates to resume the match.

Morocco’s resulting penalty was saved by Edouard Mendy, after which Senegal secured victory in extra time through a decisive strike by Pape Gueye.

Although the win earned Senegal their second AFCON title, attention has since shifted to the consequences of the protest. Reuters reports that a source close to CAF’s disciplinary body confirmed investigations would examine whether Thiaw breached regulations on respect for match officials and the duty to complete fixtures.

If wrongdoing is established, penalties could range from heavy fines to a suspension that may affect Thiaw’s involvement with the national team in upcoming competitions.

The possible sanctions have divided opinion. Supporters argue the coach acted out of passion and a genuine sense of injustice in a high-stakes moment.

Critics counter that walking off the pitch, regardless of circumstance, represents a serious violation of sporting conduct, undermining the integrity of the competition and setting a risky example.

The outcome of CAF’s disciplinary proceedings is expected to carry long-term implications, reinforcing the limits of acceptable behavior for coaches and national teams across African football.
