The Confederation of African Football has named Senegalese referee Issa Sy to take charge of Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final between Nigeria and Algeria in Marrakech.

CAF had earlier appointed Omar Artan for the fixture but later reversed the decision amid rising concerns over refereeing controversies at the ongoing tournament.

Sy is familiar with the 2025 AFCON, having officiated as Video Assistant Referee during the group-stage encounter between Morocco and Tanzania.

The new appointment is seen as a move to ease anxiety ahead of the crucial contest, with both Nigeria and Algeria competing for a semi-final berth.

The Super Eagles secured their place in the last eight with a commanding 4-0 win over Mozambique, while Algeria edged past DR Congo 1-0 after extra time.

Saturday’s match revives memories of the 2019 AFCON semi-final, where Algeria claimed a 2-1 victory through a late Riyad Mahrez free-kick.

The quarter-final showdown is scheduled to kick off at 5pm Nigerian time.
