The Senate has confirmed Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Amupitan, a Professor of Law, was approved by the upper chamber on Thursday following his screening session.

During the exercise, he responded to key questions from senators on issues relating to elections, administration, policy, and the Electoral Act, among others.

Recall that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had on Tuesday requested the Senate to confirm Amupitan as the new INEC Chairman after the tenure of Prof Mahmood Yakubu expired.

Tinubu’s request was conveyed in a letter read during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Meanwhile, after his confirmation, Amupitan is expected to take the oath of office to be administered by the President.
