Kano State governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has formally resigned his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), attributing his decision to prolonged internal crises and the need to safeguard the broader interests of the people of the state.
The resignation was made public in a statement issued on Friday by the Director of Media and Publicity, Government House, Kano, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
According to the statement, the governor communicated his decision through a letter addressed to the chairman of NNPP, Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Gwale Local Government Area, with effect from January 23, 2026.
In the letter, Governor Yusuf expressed gratitude to the party for the platform and support it provided him since he joined the NNPP in 2022, noting that he appreciated the goodwill and cooperation he received during his time in the party.

However, the governor explained that his exit was necessitated by persistent leadership conflicts, internal disagreements and ongoing court cases that have continued to undermine the party’s stability at both the state and national levels.
He noted that the unresolved issues had widened divisions within the party, eroded internal unity and generated uncertainty among members, describing the situation as increasingly irreconcilable.
Governor Yusuf said the decision followed deep reflection and was guided solely by considerations of public interest.
“After careful reflection, and without prejudice to the party’s capacity to resolve its internal challenges, I have come to the conclusion that my resignation is in the best interest of the people of Kano State,” he stated.
He added that the move was taken in good faith, without rancour, and reaffirmed his commitment to peace, unity and the sustained development of the state.
In a major political shift, the statement disclosed that the governor exited the NNPP alongside 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives and all 44 local government chairmen in the state.
The resignation letter was acknowledged by the NNPP Secretary of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, who praised the governor’s record in infrastructure, urban renewal, healthcare, education and economic empowerment.
Zubairu conceded that the party had been grappling with internal challenges but said the NNPP had no choice but to accept the resignation of whom he described as its most performing governor.
