No fewer than five soldiers were reportedly killed, while five others sustained injuries, after a suicide bomber rammed into a military convoy in the Timbuktu Triangle area of Borno State.

According to Daily Trust, security sources disclosed that two senior officers — a major and a lieutenant — were among those affected by the deadly attack.

“The attack caused significant damage to military equipment used for offensive and defensive operations in the weeks-long clearance operations,” one soldier said.

He explained that the assailants deployed a vehicle packed with explosives, which was driven directly into the convoy.

The troops were said to be returning from a clearance mission that successfully dismantled several insurgent camps and neutralised many fighters when the incident occurred.

“Yes! You know, every operation came with setbacks, but we overcame it. Unfortunately we lost five soldiers in the incident. Manga (the Commander) is hale and hearty and the operation continues, thank you,” an officer who spoke anonymously said.

He added that several armoured and logistics vehicles were destroyed when the explosive-laden van smashed into the convoy on Tuesday.

It was gathered that the bodies of the fallen soldiers have been airlifted to Maiduguri, while those injured are currently receiving medical treatment.

The Timbuktu Triangle is the same area where terrorists previously ambushed the convoy of Brigadier General Musa Uba, capturing and executing him.
