Suspected armed bandits have attacked the First ECWA Church in Ayetoro Kiri, Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, killing one person and abducting several worshippers.
The attack took place on Sunday and claimed the life of a man identified simply as Jayjay, who was reportedly shot dead during the incident.
The Chairman of Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area, Zacchaeus Dare, said the exact number of worshippers abducted has not yet been established, as security agencies and local authorities continue to assess the situation and pursue the attackers.
He disclosed that security operatives succeeded in neutralising about five of the bandits but expressed concern over what he described as the persistent disregard by some clerics for government advisories restricting social and religious gatherings in areas facing serious security threats, based on credible intelligence.
According to him, conducting extended church services in spite of such warnings weakens the collective efforts of the government and security agencies to safeguard lives.
The incident represents the second attack on a church in Okun land within a few weeks, deepening fear among residents and worshippers across the area.
Recall that on November 30, 2025, bandits attacked a Cherubim and Seraphim Church in Ejiba, Yagba West Local Government Area, abducting a cleric identified as Orlando along with some worshippers during a service.
The attackers were said to have demanded ₦500 million in ransom, later reducing the amount to ₦200 million, and issued a two-day ultimatum to the families of the victims.
The latest incident has revived concerns about the deteriorating security situation in Okun land, with residents urging security agencies and the Kogi State Government to take urgent action to protect lives and prevent further attacks.
Despite the declaration of a state of emergency by President Tinubu, insecurity across the country has continued to escalate as security operatives struggle to contain criminal elements.
