President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to late former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a leader whose record of integrity, humility and disciplined service to Nigeria will continue to echo across generations.
The President made the remarks at the official unveiling of the book “From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari” at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.
Speaking in his special remarks as Guest of Honour, President Tinubu said Buhari would be remembered less for the privileges of power and more for the principles he upheld long after leaving office.
In his words: “The measure of a leader is not simply the offices he held or the motorcades that accompanied him. It is what persists when the sirens fall silent,” noting that Buhari lived simply and viewed public office as a sacred responsibility rather than a personal entitlement.
President Tinubu extended the nation’s condolences to the Buhari family, assuring them of Nigeria’s prayers and appreciation for the late leader’s years of service.
“I extend the nation’s. He assured that the Buhari name will continue to inspire noble service for generations.”
Reflecting on their shared political path, the President recalled the formation of a broad coalition that culminated in the landmark 2015 election victory, which ended the reign of an incumbent administration.
“Our movement united diverse interests and achieved a historic victory in 2015 by unseating an incumbent president, thus reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape.”
Emphasising the expansion of that political alliance, he highlighted the rise of the now-ruling All Progressives Congress, stating, “The coalition we built in 2014 is now the fastest-growing political party in Africa today. Its growth continues.”
The President outlined key elements of Buhari’s legacy, including humility, security, foresight and social justice. “President Buhari preferred simplicity over ornamentation.
“He believed that a leader must first discipline himself before he can discipline a system,” Tinubu said.
On security, he added, “He invested in platforms and personnel, improved capacities across our armed services, and pushed for reforms that endured beyond the headlines.”
Speaking on Buhari’s focus on long-term national development, Tinubu noted, “He understood the importance of long-term thinking — constructing bridges, restoring railways, building roads, modernising our airports, and renewing critical infrastructure — while prioritising maintenance and sustainability.”
The President also commended Buhari’s commitment to social welfare, stating, “He believed in targeted social investments to ensure that the state did not ignore the poor and vulnerable.”
Tinubu urged Nigerians to sustain Buhari’s vision, saying, “A legacy is given greater meaning when those who follow choose to continue what has been started. That is my duty.” He further observed, “President Buhari loved this country consistently, morning after morning, decision after decision, staying true to the oath he took.
“That is why even those who disagreed with him often acknowledged his honesty.”
On the value of collaborative politics, Tinubu said, “Our political journey together taught me that cooperation across differences is not weakness; it is wisdom. Nation-building demands that we compete passionately and govern responsibly. President Buhari understood that the contest ends when the oath begins.”
Concluding his address, the President called for unity and national progress, declaring, “Nigeria is greater than any tribe, language, faith, or political party. This book reminds us that one life, lived with restraint and responsibility, can inspire a nation.” He prayed, “May Almighty Allah grant him mercy and Jannatul Firdaus and bring comfort to his family.
“May He bless Nigeria with unity, wisdom, and peace. Nigeria will endure, prevail, and prosper through our efforts and God’s grace.”
The book was reviewed by Dr. Charles Omole, who described From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari as a balanced and intellectually honest portrayal of the former president’s life and leadership.
He said the biography captures both Buhari’s accomplishments and limitations, offering readers deeper insight into his character, decision-making and sense of duty.
According to Dr. Omole, the book stands as an important historical record that preserves national memory and offers lessons for future leaders on integrity, discipline and responsibility in public office.
Buhari died on July 13, 2025, at the age of 82 in a London clinic after a prolonged illness.
His remains were returned to Nigeria and laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, during a state burial attended by regional leaders.
