Protesters on Monday converged on the main entrance of the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, reacting to controversy surrounding the Senate’s stance on electronic transmission of election results.
The demonstrators had earlier pledged to occupy the National Assembly to demand that mandatory electronic transmission of results be included in Nigeria’s ongoing Electoral Act amendment.
The protest follows reports that the Senate had rejected provisions requiring compulsory electronic transmission of election results in the amendment process.
While the Senate has issued multiple statements denying any wrongdoing, protesters insist lawmakers must be unambiguous by inserting the phrase “real-time electronic transmission” into the proposed law.
