An officer of the Nigeria Police Force has been listed among those apprehended and detained by military authorities over an alleged plan to topple Nigeria’s democratic government, SaharaReporters has learned.

The police officer was identified as Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim, a native of Taraba State.

According to SaharaReporters, Inspector Ibrahim was arrested in Abuja by operatives of the Defence Intelligence Agency and remains in the agency’s custody.

While the exact date of his arrest could not be confirmed, sources disclosed that intelligence obtained during the interrogation of some detained military officers led investigators to him.

“Yes, among those in DIA’s custody is a policeman. The military officers under detention are 35 (Army, Navy, Airforce) and one policeman identified as Ahmed Ibrahim. Total of 36 security operatives. He was arrested after investigation showed he was involved in the failed attempt,” a military source told SaharaReporters.

Efforts by SaharaReporters to reach the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful, as calls to his line were neither answered nor returned. A WhatsApp message sent to him also remained unanswered at the time of filing this report.

It will be recalled that in October 2025, SaharaReporters exclusively reported the arrest of several military officers by the DIA in Abuja over an alleged plot to overthrow President Tinubu’s administration.

The matter is being overseen by the Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI), Lieutenant General Emmanuel Parker Undiandeye, who heads the agency.

Established in 1986, the Defence Intelligence Agency serves as Nigeria’s principal military intelligence institution. It is responsible for collecting and supplying intelligence to the Armed Forces and the Ministry of Defence to counter security threats, protect national sovereignty and support military operations, including counterterrorism efforts.

In October 2025, senior military sources revealed the identities and service arms of 16 high-ranking officers then held by the DIA in connection with the alleged plot. Among them was a Nigerian Navy officer, Lieutenant Commander B. Abdullahi.

Further confirmation from top Defence Headquarters sources indicated that the officers, drawn from the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force, were arrested through coordinated operations by military intelligence following weeks of covert monitoring.

Nigeria has now enjoyed 27 consecutive years of uninterrupted democratic governance since the return to civilian rule in 1999.
